Dental Extractions

At Gold Star Dental, we know that hearing you need a tooth extraction might make you nervous, but you’re in good hands! Our experienced team is here to make the process as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Whether it's a routine extraction, a more complex surgical extraction, or the removal of wisdom teeth, our goal is to provide expert care with a gentle touch.

What is a Tooth Extraction?

A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. This might be necessary for various reasons, such as severe decay, gum disease, overcrowding, or trauma. While it might sound daunting, tooth extractions are a common procedure, and with our advanced techniques, the process is smooth and efficient.

At Gold Star Dental, we offer three types of extractions:

  • Routine Extractions

  • Surgical Extractions

  • Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Let’s break them down so you know exactly what to expect!

Routine Extractions

A routine extraction is usually a straightforward procedure where a tooth is removed from the mouth without the need for surgery. This is most often done for teeth that are visible in the mouth and can be easily accessed.

When is a Routine Extraction Needed?

  • Severe tooth decay or damage that can’t be repaired

  • Teeth that are overcrowded or blocking other teeth from coming in properly (sometimes before orthodontic treatment like braces)

  • Advanced gum disease causing teeth to become loose

How Does It Work?

During a routine extraction, we’ll first numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic, ensuring you’re comfortable. We then gently loosen the tooth and remove it. You might feel some pressure, but the numbing ensures you don’t feel pain during the process.

Surgical Extractions

Sometimes a tooth is not easily accessible, such as when it’s broken off at the gumline or hasn't fully erupted. In these cases, a surgical extraction is required. This is a more complex procedure, but with our skilled dental team, you’ll be well cared for throughout the process.

When is a Surgical Extraction Needed?

  • Broken or fractured teeth

  • Teeth that are impacted (stuck in the gums)

  • Teeth that haven’t fully erupted

How Does It Work?

For surgical extractions, we may need to make a small incision in the gum to access the tooth. In some cases, the tooth may need to be divided into smaller pieces for easier removal. We’ll use a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort, and in some cases, we can offer sedation options to help you feel more relaxed during the procedure.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that typically emerge in your late teens or early twenties. For many people, these teeth can cause problems if there isn’t enough space in the mouth, or if they grow in at an angle and become impacted.

When is Wisdom Tooth Extraction Needed?

  • Impacted wisdom teeth (stuck under the gum or pushing against other teeth)

  • Pain, swelling, or infection around the wisdom teeth

  • Crowding or misalignment caused by wisdom teeth

  • Decay or gum disease affecting the wisdom teeth

How Does It Work?

Wisdom tooth extractions can range from a routine extraction to a surgical one, depending on whether the teeth are impacted or fully erupted. We’ll use X-rays to assess the position of your wisdom teeth and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs. After numbing the area or using sedation, we’ll remove the teeth and provide aftercare instructions to help you heal quickly and comfortably.

What to Expect After a Tooth Extraction

After any type of extraction, some swelling, soreness, and mild discomfort are normal, but this usually subsides after a few days. We’ll give you detailed instructions on how to care for the extraction site, including tips on eating soft foods, avoiding straws, and keeping the area clean. You can also count on us to be available for any follow-up questions or concerns as you heal.
